Windows performance optimization

Print

All know this. When time elapses, the performance of a Windows installation degenerate gradually but inexorably.
Since Windows Vista, you can optimize your system with a few simple operations.
Let's see how to do this.

We begin to delete unwanted files on hard disk.
Windows has a good tool that performs most of the work.
Open Windows Explorer, then click with the right mouse button on the C: disk.

Click Properties on the context menu.
Press Disk Cleanup button.

Wait while the disc is scanned.

If we are using a non-administrator user, now we have to press the Clean system files button.

and wait for a new, more thorough scan of the drive to clean.

At the end you see a new window.
Select all the items listed to be deleted.

Now we delete the shadow copies of the files.
Select Other options tab and press the Cleaning button for shadow copies.

Then click on Ok button to delete the other files.

Now we remove old recovery points on the computer.
In Windows Explorer, click right mouse button on this PC.
Then click Properties on the context menu.

Click on Advanced System Settings.

Click Advanced tab, then press Settings button on Performance area.

Press Change button in Virtual Memory area.

Set 1024 as a fixed value or a multiple, depending on how much disk space you want to reserve for virtual memory.
This additional memory is used when programs need more memory than is physically present in the PC.

Choose System Protection tab, select the C drive and press Configure button.

Click Delete button.

Then restart the computer.

To speed up boot the computer you can also make a operation on the update database.
Click on Start, Administrative Tools, then select Services.

Scroll down to the Windows Update Service.
Then press the Stop option of the service.

When service is stopped, open My Computer, select the C: disk, then Windows folder and SoftwareDistribution folder.

Delete all contents in folder.

Restart the computer one last time.
That's all.

It's useful after all also perform a disk defragmentation if it is a magnetic disk.
